How to Get to Jekyll Island from Atlanta

The first thing you need to know is how to get yourself there. If you are looking for the most cost-effective and practical option, then we suggest driving. It’s about a 5-hour drive by car. The benefit of driving your a car is having transportation when in town, the ability to make stops along the way, and a vehicle that you can easily pack with all your beach essentials. If you’re looking for a slightly quicker option, flights are available into Brunswick Golden Isles Airport. The 3-hour flight is an excellent option for those who are packing light and want to skip the long car ride. The cost ranges from $100 to $400, depending on the season. Other options include a 7-hour bus ride or an 8-hour Greyhound bus.

Stops Along the Way from Atlanta to Jekyll Island

If you’re driving from Atlanta to Jekyll Island, there are some must-see spots on the way. This beautiful drive offers picturesque views of marshlands and coastal scenery along the way. 

First Stop: Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park

The first stop on your road trip from Atlanta to Jekyll Island is the Ocmulgee Mounds National Park. This stop is located in Marcon and is a quick detour off of I-16. Explore the ancient earthworks, which are home to ceremonial mounds built over 1,000 years ago by the Mississipian culture. This is also a great place to stretch your legs on the scenic trails or climb to the top of the Great Temple Mound to admire the panoramic views. If you are looking for more history about this location, be sure to stop by the visitor center and museum! After you are done, be sure to explore downtown Macon. This stop is filled with history, culture, and amazing southern food. 

Second Stop: Savannah, GA

Known for its beautiful architecture, southern cuisine, and riverfront streets, Savannah is a great stop along the way. While it is past the halfway point between Atlanta and Jekyll Island, Savannah is perfect for a longer stop. Take a walk through Forsyth Park, browse River Street, known for its boutiques, bars, and end your stop with some authentic southern food. We recommend eating at The Grey, which is located in a renovated 1938 Greyhound bus terminal. Or if you are looking for a more upscale experience, stop in The Olde Pink House. This 18th-century mansion is the perfect stop to get traditional Southern cuisine like shrimp and grits. We recommend calling ahead to make a reservation if you plan to stop by. If you’re looking for a fun picture moment, be sure to stop by the famous bench scene where Forrest Gump was filmed in Chippewa Square (although the bench is now in a museum).

Final Stop: Savannah to Jekyll Island

On the final leg of your trip, there are many coastal towns to stop by, including Brunswick. This charming historic downtown is filled with boutiques, cafes, and even a waterfront park.

If you’re looking to head straight to Jekyll Island but still want to stop and explore, consider making a stop at Driftwood Beach. This scenic stop is an excellent way to start your trip! If you’re looking for a more active option after being in the car all day, rent a bike and ride around the island! Explore over 2o miles of paved trails along the marshes and beaches. Another great option is exploring the Historic District.  Browse shops, find great dining options, and experience the hub of Jekyll Island.
